Gavin Jones Celebrates A Century of Horticulture 1919 - 2019
Gavin Jones heritage stretches right back to the end of World War 1, when colonel Gavin Jones returned from battle and bought a small horticultural property in Letchworth, Hertfordshire where he started cultivating alpine plants. What began as a simple hobby, soon developed into a thriving business.
Throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s Gavin Jones Landscape acquired a reputation for high quality landscaping, undertaking many large and prestigious projects in the noble houses and parklands around the Home Counties, of which several significant examples of his rock garden constructions still exist to this day.
Working in both the public and private sectors, Gavin Jones Landscape continued to expand its activities, establishing an enviable reputation for undertaking a variety of landscaping projects, hence began its successful displays at the Chelsea Flower Show. It was here in 1948, that the rock garden exhibit built by the Colonel, caught the eye of Lady Churchill. Her love of the garden was so great, that he personally gifted it to her and the entire exhibit was transported and reconstructed at the Churchill’s home at Chartwell, where it remains and can still be seen today.
As a new environmental awareness promoted the growth and importance of the commercial landscape industry, and with a change of ownership in 1988, Gavin Jones acquired a new management team who extended operations to include domestic gardens, landscape design and maintenance. They were successful in attaining many Gold and Silver RHS awards at both Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows.
By 1999, the Grounds Maintenance division of Gavin Jones had evolved considerably, thus becoming a significant part of the business. Over time additional services were added – including landscape construction, interior plant installation and maintenance, as well as specialist arboricultural works. In 2008, Gavin Jones was proud to be given the accolade and privilege of being appointed holders of the Royal Warrant to Her Majesty The Queen.
