2014 BALI Principal Award – Green Roof Installations and Roof Gardens

‘Congratulations to Plantations Landscapes for winning the Principal Award for our scheme Coca-Cola HQ, London, W1G in its category; Green Roof Installations and Roof Gardens’

Gavin Jones landscape department submitted the original tender to construct a roof garden at the new Coca-Cola headquarters in Wimpole St, London in September 2013, and were awarded the contract on the 25 November2013. Coca-Cola was moving around 300 employees from its old office in Hammersmith to the new office in April 2014 and the completion date for the project was set for the end of March 2014.
We were asked to work with BWI (the main contractor) CBRE (the client’s representative) and MoreySmith’s overall designers in order to finalise the design details and the scope of work. We were to produce working drawings from MoreySmith’s concept plans, including detail and elevation plans for decking, a green wall, feature rendered walls, all balustrades and boundary panels, lighting, irrigation, benches, tables pergolas planting borders, and planting.
Coca-Cola asked for sample panels of key items to be constructed and supplied for approval. The project was to be completed within strict timeframes alongside other trades including waterproofing contractors re profiling and waterproofing the roof that we were working on.

The build
We built a roof terrace with elements including a wildflower meadow and orchard, balau hardwood decking, feature walls with specialist flexible paint/render, balau hardwood benches, and planters with galvanised steel detail. We constructed a green wall which is 22 linear metres by 3m high, bespoke balau with zinc top dining tables, cedar trellis and boundary balustrade panels, galvanised steel and wire rope boundary panels, soiling and planting to all raised borders, and irrigation to all raised borders.

Sourcing materials for the job
All timber had to be SFC certified, including the balau hardwood, this was sourced through Alan Hayward Joinery. All plants came via our own nursery, The Plantation at Woburn Hill, Addlestone.
Coca-Cola requested special paint render/coatings to tolerate any slight movement on the project; the original proposed finish was not deemed suitable when tested on substrate by manufacturers, and difficulties with matching exact specified RAL colours meant a frantic late night search on the internet for a suitable material. The final material used was Renotex rollercoat which is a high build textured coating applied in several specialist layers by a paint roller in order to achieve the finish.
We were pleased that it worked perfectly.
