Our very own Greenwich graduate Matt Cairns is eagerly waiting to see if he will be the chosen winner at the SGD Awards ceremony this Friday at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London.
Matt Cairns, who graduated last year with a First in Landscape Architecture, is one of only three finalists in the Student Award category. He was nominated for his redesign of the Calverley Grounds public park in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
The design centres on the historic connections Tunbridge Wells has with water, and the discovery of the chalybeate springs, along with the active arts scene in the town. Sitting in a valley, the site contains many different levels, with 25m separating the highest and lowest points.
“The site was challenging due to the landform and changing levels; also, I wanted to retain as many of the mature trees as possible which created its own issues,” says Matt, who had to work through details of the local demographics, topography, planning issues and climate amongst others to guide and inform his design.
The Society of Garden Designers runs yearly awards to promote the best in landscape design and construction. Their shortlist was decided by a panel of industry experts, who were looking for ‘outstanding design skills and a clear demonstration of an understanding of the brief provided for the project’. As a shortlisted project, Matt’s design “showed an ability to handle scale, understand space and achieved the brief in a clear and concise way”.
“We are very proud of Matts success, his attention to detail and ability to interpret the customers vision makes him a valuable asset to our design team” – Paul Cook, Landscape Manager
