Public & Community Award by Sussex Heritage Trust

‘A restoration or new project, which provides or improves facilities for the community’

The project involved the restoration of The Level, an important public park in a prime location within Brighton City Centre.  Originally developed by Superintendent of Parks, Captain Bertie MacLaren in 1927, the project revived the neglected and run­ down space, bringing the park into the 21st Century

  • Refurbishment of existing pavilions
  • New water feature/drinking fountains
  • New Play equipment/area
  • New planting and lawns incorporating wildflower areas
  • New lighting
  • Rose Walk improvements
  • Interactive water play feature
  • New landscaping and planting

The skateboard park provides a sports facility, whilst the fountain integrates MacLaren features and reintroduces the model boating pond. The pavilions have been restored to provide areas for talks, community groups and exhibitions.
