The battalion is being sent into the trenches by platoons for instruction at LAQUINQUE RUE near FESTUBERT. The Colonel & I went up with the first lot last night as far as the battalion headquarters in the third line.
The trenches are awful, just as bad as they were last January. The first line is a series of islands and the parapet not bullet proof in most places. The second line is better with some breast-works, and the third line is a bit better again and all breast-works but even in that line the C.O.’s dug out has the floor an inch below water level and one stands in slush.
